One month and counting...

The countdown to Roctober 2009 has begun and I'm still flat out with work, sport and family life to put much thought into the finer details of the trip. We're still in the stormy winter months here so getting away might be nice.

I really need to work out local travel plans on the ground in USA. I'm hoping to use local public transport where possible and given the number of travel advisor websites and google maps, you can pretty much do it all yourself these days - on the cheap. We got away with it pretty well last time and it was an experience sharing local public transport with the citizens of a city.

I leave Perth Airport at about 3am on the 2nd Of October, touching down in Los Angeles at 9am and hopefully sleeping most of that journey across the Pacific so I can wake to breakfast on the plane followed by a quiet day in or around my hotel getting used to the new timezone. This has never proven to be a problem in the past as I can usually change my sleep cycle a few days before the trip.

Luckily some major acts are touring while I an in USA for work purposes. The gigs look awesome!

Yallingup Winter Waves

Obviously Pearl Jam is the band I REALLY want to see. Every time I have seen them play, or seen their live footage on youtube or DVD - they rock! I'm have 10Club (Pearl Jam Fan Club) tickets both nights which gives me the chance to be front row if my number comes up. But either way, just seeing them in a smaller American venue (6000 seats) means every ticket will be a good one. The great thing aboutPearl Jam shows is that they never play the same set twice and play almost 30 songs a night; so can probably expect about 50 different songs over the two nights. That's the equivalent of five albums. Once you add the Perth show I'll be attending in November, I'm going to see a lot of Pearl Jam songs this year!

Bruce Springsteen is going to be huge - 80,000 tickets sold out. I have a general admission floor ticket so I'll be in the surging mass of fans rocking on the grass. It will be the last ever concert at New Jersey's Giants Stadium and I expect a huge local turn out seeing their own local boy rocking. It should be an incredible once-in-a-lifetime show that will go off! I have his Live With the E Street band in NEw York DVD and there is a great bond between him and New Yorkers. As far as it goes, this will be high culture for me (call me a low brow bogan if you like, but I'm the one smiling).

AC/DC (or as my brother calls it - the Angus Young show) will be a buzz! I've never seen them and to see them in Las Vegas with fans from all over the world will be cool. MGM Grand holds about 15,000 and once again I've managed to score floor seats towards the end or the catwalk that juts out from their massive stage.Looking at some of the youtube footage of the Black Ice Tour, they seem to be enjoying their time on stage, rocking hard and the stage looks like something U2 or the Rolling Stones would come up with! Definitely appropriate for the Vegas Strip.

KISS - well, what can I say. The masters of singing about their dicks! (Love Gun, Dr Love) Rock'n'roll! The circus is in town and it is at KISS' home grounds - Maddison Square Garden! The epicenter of American Rock. Apparently they are promising a two and a half hour show, complete with huge pyrotechnics, new material and costumes. Shame Ace Frehley & Peter Chris wont be there - but the new guys are pretty awesome too.  It will be a complete throwback to my younger days seeing the first band I ever got into. And as we know at the end of the day no-one can 'rock'n'roll all night and party every day' like KISS and their fans.

Five shows, sandwiched between straight edge web design courses and seminars which promise to be every bit as good - but for different reasons. The above madness begins on Oct 3 with AC/DC and wraps up with KISS on Oct 10. I hope my already damaged ears are up to it.....
